Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai, Thailand’s northernmost province, is part of the Golden Triangle region bordering Laos and Myanmar (Burma). It’s distinguished by its remote hill tribes who live in mountainous terrain accessible by trekking. Chiang Rai City, on the Mae Kok Rive, has a well known night market and the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), a modern Buddhist shrine with quirky modern sculptures and murals.

Nearby Doi Tung Mountain is the site of a Royal Villa, a summer palace turned museum that blends traditional Lanna and contemporary architecture. Doi Tung is also topped by a 10th-century temple (Watphrathat Doi Tung) said to house the Buddha’s collarbone. Other notable temples include Wat Phra Kaew, said to be where Thailand’s revered Emerald Buddha statue was discovered in the 15th century, and 14th-century Wat Phra Singh. Thailand’s northernmost town, Mae Sai, is a hopping-off point to Myanmar, while Chiang Khong is a gateway to Laos.
